- And…that’s it – An AtoZ Rounup
As we head into the final stretch of the AtoZ, I wanted to talk about how I use my time when I travel to write.
I don’t travel *a lot* but I do spend a lot of time in vehicles when I do. I moved six hours (or so, by car) from our family home, as we’re both Edinburgh bods. So, I spend a lot of time in the car, and while my Mac does actually mostly last that long and it’s hard for me to get travel sick now, I tend not to write – much – while travelling. Instead, I build my journals and other items that I need for stories. I think, I play games, I chat with my partner and my daughter. The same happens when we’re away – there’s photos of me at every hotel we’ve stayed at with my Mac or my tablet, and writing something.
It’s not just books that need planning though – I haven’t – really – talked about it as part of my inspirations, but I also run a LOT of blogs. Not just Kaiberie, (which recently saw me being accused of hubris because it was such a big site (it’s a bit hard for it to be small, if the site is 20 years old this year)) but I run some writing sites that I’m rebooting. From PrePrepPubPromo to Stuff Writers Need, I’m quite excitedly making plans to get everything online – my daughter (Artenapan) is helping me with formatting for some of the work I’m offering, and there’s a lot on my list to get done. So when I’m travelling, I tend to think about that work, or look at that.
When you have time on your hands though, and you spend it thinking, it’s actually a good thing. I’ve found that the busier I’ve gotten in my life, the harder I find it to let go, to write on the spur of the moment, or to look at the things that need to do without feeling like I’m doing it just to fill time.
I’ve been working on a book called ‘Acts of Change’, that talks about the idea that we need to always be busy, and how it’s not good for us. There’s a bit of conversation about gamification and pace of life, but quite honestly, sometimes you just need space to not be connected and online, and think. I really do recommend it.
