I went to see John Barrowman and his sister, the irrepressible writer Carole E Barrowman, at the literary festival this weekend. I really enjoyed the talk they gave, and I even managed to bring up the National Novel Writer’s Month (which I’ve passed on the information for) when there was an open Q&A session.
They were both really funny - some of the stories they told were just brilliant, and I get the distinct impression that though it was ’scripted’ that they derailed it slightly. John talked more than his sister (and got up and danced whilst telling one of the stories) but I have to say, I was really impressed with thier relationship. And I’m looking forward to reading the book - when I get through these dammed assignments.
It’s always nice to meet people and find out they are as ‘nice’ as they project on TV, and lots of things he said really hit a chord in me. And though he was the ‘big’ name, I was even more impressed with his sister, who is a writing lecturer, and author in her own right. It’s amazing to see the differences in family members, and yet the similarities, and obvious love between them.
I picked up a copy of the book, and both signed it, and I’m hoping, if I’ve managed to pique interest in the Nanowrimo in anyone, that they’ll get in touch, but I would more than happily settle for knowing I’ve brought more people to the project, whether they contact me or not.
